Denitsa Surudzhiyska – From Media Coverage of Disasters to Documentaries – Transformation of Ethical Dimensions

Abstract: Reports and analytical television formats present different examples of journalistic reactions in a crisis. In this sense, time can be interpreted as a stroke in the development of a crisis, as its central mechanism and embodiment. On the other hand, time can also become a function of coverage, framing evolution or degradation – from an exclusive media reaction to the staid look of the journalist – analyst. The purpose of this research is to track trends in the practice of the three national televisions – BNT, BTV and Nova TV and the theoretical aspects in media coverage of disasters. The findings allow definition of the main problems in terms of media reactions in such situations and potential impact of these reactions on the audience.

Key words: journalism, television, news, documentary, disaster, ethics.
