Abstract: This article takes part in the fruitful dialogue between philosophy and art in order to meet the personalist philosophy of Martin Buber and Emmanuel Levinas with the performances of Marina Abramovic. Buber’s and Levinas’s key philosophical concepts such as I-You relation, presence, face, face-to-face relation, speech, the Other, transcendency, being are involved as instruments in the hermeneutical and critical analyses of three performances: “А-А-А”, “Nightsea crossing” and “The Artist is present”. The article consists of five parts: in the introduction the significance of the article’s subject and the research object are designated; further, the research focus moves successively to the exploration of the religious foundations of Buber’s and Levinas’s philosophy, the meaning of the concept of the face and its crucial role for the generating of presence and being, the complexity of the relations between vision and speech, and finally the significance of Abramovic’s performances in terms of the artist’s presence considered in the light of the idea of reception and hospitality in the face-to-face relation. The article points out the potential of performance as highly renowned form of art in contemporary world, on the one hand, to be taken as research object in the process of clarifying the meaning of some key philosophical concepts and, on the other hand, to trace an area for the treating of crucial existential and contemporary socio-cultural issues.
Key words: personalist philosophy, performance, face, face-to-face relation, speech, being, presence.
