Public performance is understood as an integrated communicative competence combining role-taking, work with educational content, relations with the audience, and affective reactions. The theoretical framework connects pedagogical communication, rhetorical impact, and learning through dramatic action. The study involved 23 third-grade pupils and used systematic observation, assessment by three experts, profiling of public behaviour, and pupils’ self-assessment. Four profiles were constructed – Follower, Scriptwriter, Actor, and Director – according to movement from role imitation to role interpretation and from reproduction to interpretation of educational content. Relations with the audience were additionally operationalised through constructive and deconstructive profiles. Thirteen pupils reached the Director profile, seven were Followers, two were Scriptwriters, and one was an Actor. The model demonstrates the potential of educational theatre to increase communicative autonomy and public risk gradually within a protected educational environment. It offers an adaptable framework for drama education and for other school contexts in which meaningful, audience-oriented communication is an educational objective.

Keywords: public performance, educational theatre, educational drama, pedagogical communication, role play, primary education, communication skills.

Rhetoric and Communications Journal, issue 69, October 2026

Read the Original in Bulgarian

Rhetoric, Academic, and Pedagogical Communication DOI 10.55206/VBRO1768 Evgeniya Roeva Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” E-mail: e.roeva@fp.uni-sofia.bg Abstract:The article presents a staged pedagogical model for developing primary pupils’ public performance through educational theatre.
