Abstract: Over the past decades, the controversy regarding the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in social sciences has taken a central place in academic discussions. The incompatibilities of quantitative and qualitative methods and procedures have gradually evolved towards the establishment of incompatibilities with the more fundamental epistemological assumptions of quantitative and qualitative paradigms. Using arguments based on the philosophy of social sciences and social research theories, the current article aims to simultaneously broaden the scope of the paradigm debate and highlight the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative methods in social sciences. This will serve as a guide for representatives of academic communities, project teams and researchers in their selection of appropriate methods for the purposes of their research.
