Abstract: This work problematizes the oppositions own-foreign and similar-different in the light of intercultural communication. A conceptual model, explaining the link between the opposition own-foreign and the category “social identity”, is presented. The opposition similar-different is interpreted as an invariant of the opposition own-foreign and is put in connection with the categories “social distance” and “ethnocentrism” in terms of intercultural communication. The theoretical views are illustrated with examples from the social practice.
Keywords: otherness, opposition own-foreign, opposition similar-different.
